We offer a selection of technical articles dealing with the safety of machines and plants - both in general and on particular aspects of product families for machine safety. Some of the contributions are from Schmersal employees, others are written by independent specialists, e.g. from industrial assessment organisations. We informed you about the draft of a planned change to EN 1088:1996 in the 24/02/07 edition of the MRL (Machinery Directive – MD) News dated 14.02.2007. This information concerned the amendment AMD 1 on the subject "The use of design to minimise opportunities for circumvention" that has been passed some time ago and has also in the meantime been incorporated into the current version of the standard. more
Schmersal presented two new series of safety sensors. One series is intended for hygienic applications in the food-processing industry; the other one uses a new operating principle. more
In this article we would like to take the opportunity to investigate a few aspects that must be heeded in connection with this and we would like to illustrate the possibilities that today’s safety components offer for minimising risks of this nature. more
From hardware into the software The safety-related functions are increasingly shifted from the hardware to the software level. This is enabled by safety controllers, which can be flexibly adapted to the individual application. An example of such safety controller is the new PROTECT PSC System from the Schmersal Group. With its modular structure, this system is suitable both for relatively simple applications and complex tasks. If this controller is combined with the PDMS drive monitoring system, realizing new operating modes such as "set-up mode" and "process observation" become a piece of cake, as shows the example of a crane manufacturer, who has modernised his old boring machine with the latest safety technology. more
