Many complex machinery and plants are equipped with multiple safety guards. According to the Machinery Directive, they all need to be safe, which means that the machine builder must provide the required number of safety switchgear. The installation of the switchgear of course consumes a lot of time and money.
The BNS 33, BNS 36 and BNS 260 safety sensors from the Schmersal Group can facilitate this job. For these series, adapters are now available, enabling a series-wiring of the safety sensors of this type.
With the adapters, the safety sensors - equipped with M8 connectors - can be simply series – or series- / parallel-wired.
The number of safety sensors in this series-wired chain is limited to 30 devices; or to a cable length of 50 m. Adapters are available for the BNS safety sensors with one NC and one NO contact and with two NC contacts. The installation is simple: if the user needs to set up, for instance, a series-wiring or a series-/parallel-wiring of six safety sensors, he only needs five identical Y-adapters. The sixth safety sensor then is plugged in into the adapter of the previous sensor as termination.
In this way, conventional safety sensors can be interconnected, thus reducing the installation costs. Alternatively, safety sensors with integrated AS-i Safety at Work interface are available, e.g. the BNS 260 AS series. And if in addition to the ease of fitting, the mechanical engineer also wants to retrieve additional diagnostic information, the use of the “intelligent” safety sensors of the CSS family, e.g. the CSS 34, is recommended. These safety components can also be smoothly series-wired without detriment to the achievable safety level. For the simplified series-wiring of the safety channels as well as diagnosis interfaces of these sensors, Schmersal has developed the so-called T-adapters (photo).
